If you're in college, chances are you're not looking to buy a Rolex, so let's start at the bottom price bracket. Swatch, Timex and Fossil are by far the most popular in the reasonably priced field, averaging around $75 with a surprisingly diverse catalogue. Michael Kors offers watches a step above the average for both men and women. The prices for the average metal watches retails for around $250. I can say from personal experience that all three brands are fairly durable and can withstand moderate use. The old phrase "you get what you pay for" certainly applies to watches.
Their catalogue is separated into two main models; the Seamaster and the Speedmaster. The Seamaster is a collection of dive watches to accompany divers on their excursions many meters below the sea. The watch construction is made almost entirely out of stainless steel with luminous markings to help the wearer see the time in the darkness of the deep. The unique characteristic of divers watches are the rotatable bezel to help divers keep track of how much air is left in their oxygen tanks. The most popular models are the watches used by Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig as James Bond; the traditional Seamaster (which I wear daily), the Planet Ocean and the Aqua Terra. The metal bracelets are easily replaced with bands made of leather, nylon or rubber. The Speedmaster model is the chronograph for Omega. A chronograph is a regular watch with an integrated stop watch function that is activated through the watch's crown. Although Omegas can be expensive (the Planet Ocean retails for $4,000 and up), these timepieces will last a lifetime with minimal care.
This brings us to the universally known and loved: Rolex. Despite its "bank breaking" reputation, Rolex watches are relatively cheap in the watch world. Patek Philippe, the creater of the Rolex, prices his watches at around $80,000 while some even go for $1.5 million and that's still not the top. Rolex was founded in Switzerland in 1919, and 95 years later "Rolex" is synonymous with watches and wealth. The Rolex catalogue is split into many different subdivisions. The most popular of these subdivisions are the Date-just, the Submariner, and the Yachtmaster.
Buying a nice watch may seem like a great misallocation of money but in reality it can be seen as a fashionable investment. Well maintained and well built watches like Omega and Rolex don't easily lose their value as time ticks on. Depending on the model and materials, watches could even appreciate in value. Well made watches are very resilient; a fact that makes a watch the ideal heirloom to pass on from generation to generation.
