What influenced you to start your own business?
I have had Type-1 diabetes for 18 years which comes with a whole bunch of restrictions and annoyances. I have an insulin pump as well which makes life significantly easier, but tends to get in the way. In high school my Mom and I had the idea to put pockets on the inside of my lacrosse shorts which worked perfectly for me because I wore my spandex shorts while working out and dressing up, where my pump tended to get in the way most. Once I got to college I realized that other people with type-1 diabetes had the same problem and would be interested in my product.
Has Fordham influenced your business at all?
One of the major reasons I started Pumpstash was because of the Compass Fellowship, a social entrepreneur organization on campus. They were a huge help at the university level as well as the national level in terms of research and launch process, mentorship, and inspiration. I have also started working with the Fordham Foundry, an innovation and entrepreneurship accelerator who help launch local businesses, who have been a huge help so far.
What is the most difficult thing you faced?
I did not know anything about the fashion industry and having to learn the process and the terms for each step has been really interesting but also frustrating. Especially picking out fabrics was so daunting. I always thought “spandex” was one type of material, but each fabric store had 2-3 floors with rows and rows of hundreds of different lycra material, each one differing slightly in composition and price.
What is the coolest experience you have had?
Some of the feedback I have gotten from people with type-1 diabetes or parents of kids with diabetes. It’s cool to see people excited about my product and that it can make a difference in their life.
Is it hard to balance school and your business?
It’s definitely busy, especially since most meetings are during work hours (aka school hours) but I’ve learned a lot about time management!
What are your future business plans?
Launch spandex shorts for women and children in the next couple of months and eventually expand to other products for women, and products for men.
